This is a rosé de saignée of Barbera and Bonarda, and it is savory, concentrated and sanguine, with flavors of blackberry and crunchy cranberry. Montesissa is located in Emilia-Romagna, and the winery’s focus is on sparkling wines, a unique fizzy style that’s actually a hallmark of the region. Both offerings today are pet-nats, meaning that the wine is moved from cask to bottle before the fermentation is complete, such that the final dose of carbon dioxide (a natural byproduct of fermentation) remains trapped in the wine, giving it its bubbles.
